Getting colder, scattered snow Sunday afternoon

Temps near freezing, lower wind chills

DETROIT – Detroit's Sunday weather will have two distinct features. One, temperatures will fall, not rise, during the day as colder air arrives. Two, slippery conditions remain possible with wintry weather. Then temperatures take a nose-dive later this week.

Sunday morning will begin with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above freezing before sunrise. With a cold front imposing and an atmosphere still thick with moisture. Rain and snow showers will be scattered about Southeast Michigan for families going to early services. Even with no weather alerts, motorists must remain cautions on roads slickened by rain or snowflakes. A greater chance of snow will be north of 8 Mile.

After a lunchtime lull, Sunday afternoon will have temperatures descend to freezing or lower. Scattered snow showers and squalls will dart across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Accumulations will not be heavy, but it would be a good idea for residents to salt their walkways and driveways and brush away any freshly fallen snow. Areas north of 8 Mile may receive over 1 inch of new snow. Detroit and other areas south of 8 Mile may get up to 1 inch of snow.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: DETROIT LIONS VS. DALLAS COWBOYS IN ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Detroit Lions fans lucky enough to go to AT&T Stadium in Texas to cheer for Detroit will have to pack winter clothes to remain warm. Skies will be partly sunny during the day with highs near 40 degrees and partly cloudy skies at night with lows near 30 degrees. Every piece of Lions gear (hat, coat, scarf and gloves) will be needed to stay warm.

Snow showers begin to diminish Sunday evening, but any untreated slipperiness caused by snow will remain because temps sink further below freezing.

Sunday night will be partly cloudy and very cold. Temperatures will plummet to the low teens by Monday morning. Wind chills will be near or below zero.

Monday will be partly sunny in Motown and stay very cold with temps in the teens all day; low teens in the morning and middle and upper teens in the afternoon. .

An Alberta Clipper will cruise quickly over the Motor City area Monday night and Tuesday. An inch or more of snow will fall and will not melt because temperatures will be well below freezing. The mercury will be in the teens all day and rise to only 20 degrees. Wind chills will be in the single digits.

Then the bottom falls out and and Southeast Michigan gets downright frigid for the first time in 2015. Daytime temperatures on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will barely make it above 10 or 15 degrees. Nighttime readings and morning lows will be in the single digits with wind chills well below zero. It will be dry, but parents will need to prepare their children for winter's onslaught with extra layers under winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves.
