Heat returns for summer's first weekend

Sunday will be hotter, more humid

DETROIT – Detroit weekends love to flirt with 90°F (32°C for our Canadian friends), and this weekend is no exception. Thunderstorms will rumble Sunday afternoon and evening. Fireworks weather looks fantastic Monday.

An Air Quality Alert (aka, Ozone Action Day) has been declared, so residents can carpool, use public transportation and stop mowing lawns or using gas-powered equipment early. Good time to be neighborly by checking on seniors and people with respiratory ailments.

Saturday evening will be fair and warm with temps in the 70s and low 80s (22 to 27°C).

Saturday night will be mild and clear; perfect for stargazing. Overnight lows will be in the low and mid 60s (16 to 19°C).

Sunday will be hotter and more humid. Highs will be near 90°F (32°C). Ahead of a cold front, showers and thunderstorms will race across the region from west to east. The National Weather Service has Southeast Michigan in the "Marginal" and "Slight" Risk categories for strong to severe storms. Driving rain, fierce lightning and damaging hail and wind are possible between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET.

Monday will be drier while retaining summer-time heat. Skies will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 80s (28 to 31°C). It remains dry Monday night for the Ford Fireworks. Keep cool tips will still be needed. Remember, you can watch the fireworks only on Local4.
