Fog and wind alerts Christmas Eve, morning across SE Michigan

Increasing wind speeds late Wednesday

DETROIT – A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Detroit and all of Southeast Michigan until 9am, Wednesday! Drivers and pedestrians need to exercise extreme caution while driving and walking.

Tuesday evening remain much warmer than average in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Shoppers will need to add extra batteries, weather radios and flashlights to their shopping list because a High Wind Watch will go into effect at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. Scattered power outages are possible.

Tuesday night will be milder than average with lows in the low 40s. Spotty showers are possible before midnight. Another round of steady, and at times heavier, rain arrives by dawn, Wednesday.

Wednesday morning will be foggy and wet for last-minute morning shoppers. Temperatures rise to the 50s again during the afternoon, but more showers are expected with a few thunderstorms before the day is done. Do not be surprised by the clap of thunder a few times to and from the mall.

The wind becomes more wicked late in the afternoon and Wednesday night. Wind speeds between 15 and 30 mph and higher gusts 30 to 45 mph may cause damage and power outages in some areas. If it's trash-day, remember to gather your trash cans and any loose articles as soon as you can.

Children will not need to worry. Santa and his reindeer can handle some higher winds, but families traveling very early Christmas morning must use caution on the roads, especially when driving high profile vehicles like trucks and RVs. Christmas Day will be colder as people unwrap their gifts. Temps will be in the low and middle 30s all day with wind chills in the 20s. Wrapping up in a warm blanket indoors or a warm winter coat outdoors is a good idea.

The first day of Kwanzaa, Friday, will be partly sunny and chilly with morning lows just below freezing and afternoon temps just above 40.

Friday night and Saturday will have a rain-snow mix. Saturday's temps will be between 30 and 35 degrees all day. Sunday will be colder with mostly sunny skies and temps in the 20s.

CHRISTMAS TRAVEL WEATHER

Anyone traveling to western Michigan ought to prepare for lake effect snow and snow squalls Christmas Eve while traveling to colder air.

The East Coast, from the Washington, DC-Baltimore area through New York and to New England, will receive a deluge of rain and will be hit by gusty winds. It would be wise for air travelers to call their airlines within 24 hours of departure to make sure their flights are on time. Drivers need to factor in extra time, too, especially on those multi-hour trips.
