Light rain arrives in metro Detroit tonight

We have a big midweek storm to monitor

DETROIT – You've probably heard of the Gales of November ... those massive storms that hit the Great Lakes region in early November.

The reason we are now in prime time for these storms is that the Great Lakes are still relatively mild, but we're also starting to get intrusions of cold air from Canada.

When this cold air flows over the warmer Great Lakes, an unstable atmosphere develops…we meteorologists call it the Great Lakes Aggregate.

Some storm systems developing in the plains and moving this way get an extra boost from this situation, and become powerful storms. One such storm, exactly 102 years ago today, sank eight freighters on the Great Lakes and killed at least 235 men on those ships.

You can read the article I wrote about that storm here: 100th anniversary of powerful winter storm

One of those Gales of November will develop this week and bring us a healthy dose of wind -- but not nearly as strong as the historic Great Lakes Storm of 1913, or the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald forty years ago (come on back here to ClickOnDetroit.com tomorrow…we'll have special coverage of that event, including an article by me about the storm itself).

Tonight, though, I just expect increasing clouds, with light rain developing after midnight (your evening plans are fine).
