Metro Detroit forecast: Above average temps continue

Rain chances Tuesday

DETROIT – We waited all week for it, and Mother Nature sure delivered in a big way.

Saturday’s high temperature of 69 degrees (21 degrees Celsius) obliterated our old record of 62 degrees (17 degrees Celsius), set in 1976.

Sunday’s high temperature of 66 degrees (19 degrees Celsius) broke the former record of 64 (18 degrees Celsius) degrees set way back in 1884.  While it may not get this warm during the week ahead, temperatures will remain well above our average high of 36 degrees (2 degrees Celsius) until a reality check comes our way later in the week, reminding us that it’s still February.

Monday will be partly cloudy and not as warm, with highs in the low- to mid-50s (11 to 12 degrees Celsius), although temperatures near Lakes Erie and Huron may hold in the mid to upper 40s (8 to 9 degrees Celsius) due to the cooler east wind off of those lakes. Sunrise is at 7:22 a.m., and sunset is at 6:13 p.m.

Increasing clouds tonight. Lows in the upper 30s (4 degrees Celsius).

Tuesday forecast

Rain showers are likely Tuesday, with highs in the mid to upper 50s (13 to 15 degrees Celsius).

Gradual clearing Tuesday night, with lows in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius).

Wednesday forecast

Mostly sunny on Wednesday, with highs in the low to mid 60s (16 to 18 degrees Celsius). Wednesday’s record high is 65 degrees (18.5 degrees Celsius) set in 1930, so this record is in serious jeopardy if temperatures overachieve like they did this past weekend.

Partly cloudy Wednesday night, with lows in the mid 40s (7 degrees Celsius).

Thursday forecast

Partly cloudy Thursday, with highs in the mid 50s (12 degrees Celsius).

Increasing clouds Thursday night with rain developing after midnight. A thunderstorm is also possible. Lows in the upper 30s (4 degrees Celsius).

Friday continues to shape up as an interesting day, as a strong low pressure system winds up over the Great Plains and heads toward the western Great Lakes. Rain and even some gusty thunderstorms are possible…severe storms aren’t even out of the question depending upon the eventual path that this strengthening surface low tracks. Highs should reach the mid 50s (12 degrees Celsius).

Rain and thunderstorms are still possible Friday evening then, after the cold front blows through, snow showers are possible after midnight.  Windy, with lows in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius).

Very windy and much colder on Saturday, with a chance of snow showers. Temperatures falling from the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius) to the mid 30s (2 degrees Celsius) by the end of the afternoon.

Mostly sunny on Sunday, with highs near 40 degrees (4 to 5 degrees Celsius).
