Metro Detroit forecast: A wintry mix? Seriously?

This week brings a little of everything

DETROIT – It's a quiet start to the week, but things are going to get interesting in a couple of days.

Tonight should feature a partial break up of our cloud cover, with partly cloudy skies eventually developing. It's going to be a cold one, with lows in the mid to upper teens. Fortunately, wind will become very light overnight, so wind chill shouldn't be an issue.

Tuesday will be a chilly day, but a day filled with sunshine which certainly helps. Highs in the mid to upper 30s, with a light wind from the east.

Tuesday's sunrise is at 7:30 AM, and Tuesday's sunset is at 7:50 PM.

Increasing clouds Tuesday night, with a quick progression from snow to sleet to freezing rain developing after midnight. By rush hour Wednesday, I think most of us will be above freezing, with just regular rain falling. Lows initially in the upper 20s, with temperatures rising through the night. This is a very challenging forecast because I have to time the approaching moisture with the gradual warming we'll start seeing. It's basically a race against time -- if the moisture arrives farther ahead of the warm air push, then we'll see a more lengthy period of wintry precipitation before the changeover to rain. If the warm air push is more aggressive than that, then we might see no snow and only a brief period of ice (if any). Regardless of whether it's mostly wintry or mostly rain, the Wednesday morning rush hour should be slower than normal.

If you haven't done so already, I suggest following me on Twitter for weather updates. If you "don't do" Twitter, then you may want to consider this, as it's a great way for me to quickly send important updates to you (as well as occasional really cool things, like last night's beautiful crescent moon cozying up next to brilliant Venus in the western sky). Signing up for Twitter is free, and if you don't want a big clutter of stuff coming to you, only follow me. My Twitter handle is @PGLocal4.

As mentioned above, I think we'll start the day Wednesday with rain (although those of you to the far north may still have the lingering tail end of the mix). Skies then become partly cloudy and a strong southwest wind develops, which will push temperatures into the upper 50s!

Becoming mostly cloudy Wednesday night, with more showers developing. Lows in the upper 30s.

Even if we start Thursday with a few showers, those should end and skies will become partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 40s, although it'll be breezy.

Partly cloudy Thursday night, with lows in the mid 20s.
