Metro Detroit weather forecast: Chance for severe storms Wednesday

DETROIT – We're getting a break from the wet weather today.

Temperatures are seasonable. Humidity is down. Sunshine has been weaving its way around those puffy cumulus clouds. Although most of us will stay dry through tonight and even tomorrow, there are some notable chances for strong and severe storms in the next 24-36 hours.

Let's start with overnight tonight. It looks like we'll see an isolated thunderstorm or two. The further north you are, the better chance those storms could bring some gusty winds and small hail. But the majority of SE Michigan will skip out on that.

Wednesday:

Everybody gets the warmer temperatures and higher humidity. In fact, Wednesday will be our warmest day of the next seven. Temps will max out around 87. But we'll see some heat index (!) readings around 90 before the storms fire. The cold front location will determine where the storms get going. That will likely be in Lenawee and Monroe counties. But if the front slows down, we'll see storms further north. ANY storm that forms will likely go severe, with damaging winds and quarter-sized hail.

Thursday:

Thursday is dry and a bit cooler with lower humidity.

Friday:

Friday may be our biggest weather obstacle to get over. We're watching a very wet system that will likely be with us for several hours. It's too early to get cute with the timing, but afternoon/evening showers are likely, possibly lingering into Saturday morning. Rainfall totals could be over 1 inch, and in some spots more than 2 inches.

So we've got a very active few days ahead of us.
