Metro Detroit weather forecast: Slow, steady improvement

Get ready for a SPECTACULAR holiday weekend!

DETROIT – First of all, how about a big Happy Canada Day to our neighbors across the river!!!

I always find it exciting that both nations celebrate our respective Independence Days in the same week, giving us the opportunity to acknowledge our many freedoms together.

Once the isolated little showers moved out of the area earlier today, drier air started moving in, which has given some of us a little sunshine this afternoon (while others, particularly to the north, have kept more cloud cover). But the dry air will eventually win out, and clouds should continue breaking up during the night. Lows in the mid to upper 50s (13° Celsius for you Canadians), with a very light wind. And remember to look west after sunset, where you'll see very bright Venus and Jupiter still close together in our sky. They were closest last night, but most of us missed the show due to the clouds. Watch over the next few nights as they slowly pull farther and farther apart!

After a partly cloudy start on Thursday, skies will become mostly sunny, with just some puffy fair-weather cumulus clouds popping up during the afternoon, making for a very pretty sky. Highs in the mid 70s (24° Celsius). North-northeast wind at 4 to 8 mph.

Thursday's sunrise is at 6:01 AM, and Thursday sunset is at 9:14 PM.

Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the mid to upper 50s.

Mostly sunny on Friday as many of us start our holiday weekend (I'll have a bunch of family over for dinner…I'll be the guy at the barbeque). Highs in the upper 70s will make for a spectacular day.

Mostly clear Friday night, with lows in the upper 50s.

Mostly sunny on Saturday (it could become partly cloudy north of I-69, as you'll be closer to a very weak cold front that will stall over northern Michigan and then dissipate). Highs near 80°. If you have a flag, make sure you have it out this weekend -- let's show our patriotism and spirit!

Mostly clear Saturday night, with lows in the low 60s.

Mostly sunny on Sunday, with highs in the low to mid 80s.

Mostly clear Sunday night, with lows in the mid 60s.

Mostly sunny and becoming more humid on Monday, with highs in the mid 80s.
