Metro Detroit weather: Monitoring midweek severe weather threat

Clouds arrive this week

DETROIT – As expected, sunshine graced our skies Tuesday. I hope you had a chance to enjoy it, because the next two days will be much more unsettled.

Tuesday night features increasing clouds, with just an isolated shower possible.  Most of us should have a dry night.  Lows in the mid 50s (12 degrees Celsius) will be set in the middle of the night, as you and I awaken to temps likely in the upper 50s (15 degrees Celsius) around dawn.  Southeast to south wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday morning will be mostly cloudy (with a little luck, perhaps we get a bit of limited sunshine), with just a few showers possible. The timing of any afternoon storms is highly sensitive to the timing of an approaching cold front. While all of us are at risk for a scattered storm, it appears right now that the best chance will be mid to late afternoon in our South Zone (Lenawee and Monroe Counties). If these storms fire up in time, meaning during the warmest part of the day, then there’s a chance there could be a few strong ones.  But I’m not particularly impressed with the Wednesday severe threat. Here’s the Storm Prediction Center’s severe outlook for Wednesday.

Otherwise, Wednesday will be a mild day, with highs in the low 70s (22 degrees Celsius), with mid to upper 60s (19-20 degrees Celsius) in the Thumb, and even cooler near Lake Huron.

Wednesday’s sunrise is at 6:46 a.m., and Wednesday’s sunset is at 8:20 p.m.

There still the chance for a shower or thunderstorm Wednesday night as the cold front that comes through Wednesday afternoon stops near the state line, and then starts retreating back to the north as a warm front.  However, my feeling right now is that anything that develops will be pretty sparse. Lows in the mid-50s (13 degrees Celsius).

Showers and thunderstorms develop sometime midday Thursday into the afternoon. There are a lot of ingredients coming into play that will factor into the timing and strength of these storms but, right now, I think there’s a better chance to see some severe storms Thursday than on Wednesday. Highs in the mid-70s (24 degrees Celsius).

Rain ends Thursday evening, then becoming breezy and colder, with lows in the mid 40s (7 degrees Celsius).

Partly sunny and breezy on Friday, with highs back down into the mid 50s (13 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy Friday night, with chilly lows in the mid to upper 30s (3-4 degrees Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Saturday, with highs in the upper 50s (15 degrees Celsius).

Here’s a change for Sunday that’ll make you smile. Tuesday's computer models are tracking the storm that showed up in Monday's models much farther south, so Sunday now looks dry, with highs near 60 degrees (15-16 degrees Celsius).

Temperatures should remain the same through next Tuesday, before another big warm-up commences\, we’ll be in the 70s Wednesday and Thursday.
