Metro Detroit weather: Rain and isolated thunderstorms

Snow chances Wednesday

The first round of rain and isolated thundershowers will move through this morning with a few areas of moderate downpours which may slow down your morning drive.

We keep the chance for scattered showers throughout the day so keep the umbrella handy and know that we will also see stretches of cloudy but dry conditions today. Mid 30 this morning warming into the low to mid 50s by the mid to late afternoon. It will be a bit breezy SSE 5-15 mph gusting to 20 mph.

There is a weak or Marginal Risk for severe weather for Metro Detroit later tonight as a stronger wave of rain and thundershowers moves in. We will get some heavy downpours tonight and overnight so we need to watch out for flooded streets. Rain may total a full 1” of rain overnight with more on tap for Wednesday. Other than heavy downpours, look out for dangerous lightning and isolated damaging winds late tonight too.

The mild and moist air lingers Wednesday with more rain showers adding to our wet frustrations. A sharp drop in temps through the afternoon with a cold front will switch rain to snow late tomorrow and it will likely be measurable snow by Thursday morning. Winds will be strong as well SW 20-30 mph. Due to a warm surface and the possibility of rain mixing in… snow totals are a bit uncertain. Right now, it looks like our far North Zone could get 2-4”, The I-69 corridor should get about 2” and Metro Detroit will be in the 1-2” territory.

Thursday will be snowy to start with temps in the upper 20s to low 30s feeling much cooler.  A few scattered snow showers and/or wintry mix are likely on Thursday, and we may get a few more snow showers Friday into early Saturday. So, warm for the next 24-36 hours and then much cooler Thursday and Friday mainly in the 20s to mid 30s.
