Above average with sunshine to start 2017 in Motown

Highs near 40 degrees

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2017.

 

The new year starts off a high note in Detroit with temperatures above average for January. The sun will shine Sunday followed by rain part of Monday and Tuesday.

Southeast Michigan's first morning of 2017 will have sunshine and temperatures starting  in the 20s and wind chill's in the upper teens and low 20s. Families going to and from services for the first time this year will need their winter coats, scarves, gloves and hats to stay warm.

 

Sunday afternoon will have mostly sunny skies, but a nice wind blowing from the south and southwest will boost temps 5 to 10 degrees above average. Highs will be near 40° or 40s.

 

Sunday evening has a big football game for the Detroit Lions against the Green Bay Packers. The Lions try to make the playoffs and clinch the NFC North Title at Ford Field. It will be chilly with temperatures 30s outside the stadium. It remains dry on roads for football fans and tailgaters. .

 

Sunday night low temps will be above average, too; in the low 30s.

Monday will have cloudier skies, and rain is possible. The Motor City area starts dry. The afternoon will be wet for anyone driving through the afternoon rush hour. More warmer-than-average conditions are on the way. Highs will be in the low and middle 40s.

 

The chance of rain continues Monday night into Tuesday morning. The week's highest temperatures arrive Tuesday afternoon. It will be near 50°F.

 

Then reality settles back in Wednesday and the rest of the week. Wednesday will have flurries with temps in the 20s and low 30s. Thursday and Friday will be more frigid with partly sunny skies and highs only in the 20s. Lows will be in the teens with wind chills near zero for students and workers going back to bus stops.
