Metro Detroit under wind chill warning, advisory

Potential weekend snow storm being watched

DETROIT – The following counties are will be under a wind chill warning from 8 p.m. Wednesday until noon on Thursday:

  • Oakland
  • Macomb
  • Washtenaw
  • Wayne

Wind chills could fall as low as minus 30 in some areas.

Detailed forecast

Snow showers are rapidly developing, and should impact our afternoon. Highs in the mid teens. Southwest wind at 8 to 13 mph will create wind chills generally around zero.

Snow showers diminish this evening. Any developing breaks in the overcast should help temperatures fall to record lows averaging around -7°, with lower readings in the typically colder locales. Northwest wind at 5 to 10 mph should create wind chills between -25° and -30° generally north of 8 Mile – where the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning -- and between -15° and -24° south of 8 Mile – where a Wind Chill Advisory has been issued.

Partial sunshine develops on Thursday, but any sun we get will be purely cosmetic, as highs will remain in the single numbers. Wind chills stay well below zero.

Becoming mostly clear and extremely cold Thursday night, with record lows across southeast Michigan between -10° and -20°.

Mostly sunny to start on Friday, then clouds increase at some point during the afternoon. Highs still only in the single numbers.

Light snow develops after midnight Saturday night. Lows in the single numbers.

Light snow Saturday morning may taper off during the afternoon. Highs in the mid to upper 20s means that we should be able to actually get out and play in this snow!

Saturday night is where things start to get interesting. The latest computer model output…which just came in late this morning…are still spinning up a stronger area of low pressure over the south-central plains, and then sending that low to the northeast. If this pans out, then snow should develop after midnight. Lows in the upper teens.

The new computer models are showing better agreement that we'll see several inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday. It's way too early to try and get specific on amounts, but we have plenty of time to fine tune this forecast. Stay tuned…I'll keep you updated (and those of you who follow me on Twitter get additional updates…my Twitter name is @PaulGrossLocal4). Highs Sunday in the low to mid 20s.

Mostly sunny on Monday, with highs in the mid teens, and lows around -4°.
