Overcast, snow on the way

Snow on the way

DETROIT – Sunday will not be as cold, but skies will be gray with snow on the horizon. Snow arrives just in time for the commute back to work and school.

Sunday morning will be mostly cloudy and mostly dry. There may be one or two flurries, but treated and shoveled streets and sidewalks will remain passable. Temperatures will hover between 10 and 15 degrees at dawn. Families traveling to services or the 2015 Plymouth Ice Festival early will need to dress in layers and bundle up.

Sunday afternoon will be cloudy but not as cold as Saturday. A southwest wind will blow in air that is not as cold as the Arctic air mass leaving Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Temperatures will rise to the middle and upper 20s with a southwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

Sunday evening will continue to be overcast with temperatures in the middle then low 20s. A storm brewing south of Michigan will bring flurries across the Michigan-Ohio border at dinner time. Southern Monroe and Lenawee Counties will see some of the first flakes. A better chance of snow occurs closer to midnight and early Monday morning.

Light to moderate snow arrives Sunday night and early Monday morning. It becomes slipperier for people with a late night or working the night shift. Highways and sidewalks become covered with snow that will be somewhat powdery. Motorists must give a wide berth to crews treating or shoveling any roads. Overnight lows will be in the middle and upper teens.

By the middle of Monday morning, many communities will receive 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow.

The snow will stop falling well before Monday afternoon. Highs will be near 25 degrees. Colder air moves in Monday night with lows in the single digits. Tuesday's highs will be in the teens (over 10 degrees below average) with sunshine returning.

Fortunately, more seasonable air arrives for Wednesday and the rest of the week. Partly to mostly sunny skies are in the forecast with highs in the 20s on Wednesday and Thursday. Temps will break 30 degrees by Friday with dry conditions in the evening for the 2015 NAIAS (Auto Show) Charity Preview at Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit.
