Weekend forecast update for metro Detroit

Plus an update on Hurricane Joaquin

DETROIT – Before getting to our forecast, I want to start with Hurricane Joaquin because this storm will impact our weather in some manner as we head into the weekend.

As of the time I am writing this (2:00 PM), new information just in from the National Hurricane Center indicates that Joaquin is located about 190 miles east-northeast of the central Bahamas, and continues to strengthen -- maximum sustained winds are up to 85 mph. The computer models have been in extraordinary disagreement this week on the evolution of the developing weather pattern and how it may steer this storm. Today's models, however, are starting to show a trend toward a more southern landfall in North Carolina -- but there are still significant differences in timing, and the cone of uncertainty is still very large. I've been very concerned all week long on the possible impact on the U of M game at Maryland this Saturday night, and I have been advising Coach Harbaugh and his staff about the situation.

Joaquin is more than just an "east coast thing," as it will push some Atlantic moisture back our way, which will increase our chance for showers as we head into the weekend.

We don't have to worry about rain today or tonight, though, with partly cloudy to mostly clear skies, and overnight lows dropping into the low to mid 40s (6° Celsius for our Canadian neighbors). Wind will continue brisk out of the northeast at 10 to 15 mph.

Mostly sunny on Thursday, with just some patches of clouds from time to time. Highs in the low 60s (16° Celsius), with a breezy northeast wind at 10 to 20 mph. Thursday's sunrise is at 7:30 AM, and Thursday's sunset is at 7:15 PM.

Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the low 40s (6° Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Friday, with highs near 60° (16° Celsius).

Partly cloudy Friday night…a cool but great evening for high school football games with temps in the 50s, and overnight lows in the mid 40s (7° Celsius).

Saturday is still a challenging forecast due to the timing of Hurricane Joaquin. Even if we start the day with some sunshine, clouds should increase, and some models give us a shower chance before the end of the afternoon -- while other models hold them off until Saturday night. Cooler highs in the mid 50s (13° Celsius).

Shower chances increase Saturday night, with lows in the mid 40s (7° Celsius).

Sunday continues with a chance of showers, and highs near 60° (16° Celsius).

A shower is still possible on Monday, with highs in the low 60s (17° Celsius).

Then partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with moderating temperatures into the mid 60s (19° Celsius) on Tuesday, and the upper 60s (20° Celsius) on Wednesday.
