Scattered snow, cold Friday afternoon

Highs near freezing

DETROIT – Spring is a week old in Detroit, but Old Man Winter is making snowflakes fall Friday afternoon. Skies will be sunnier tomorrow, but it remains cold. Thankfully, a warm-up is in sight in less than a week.

Friday afternoon will have scattered snow showers. Fortunately, accumulations will be minor to non-existent. So it's more like conversational snow. However, some sidewalks, side-streets, ramps, bridges or overpasses may become slippery. Afternoon drivers and boys and girls and adults walking home from school or work must remain cautious. Highs will only be in the low 30s.

Snow showers diminish Friday evening with temperatures dipping to the 20s. Music and theater fans going to and from Guys & Dolls at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, Heart at the Palace of Auburn Hills or the Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Band at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit still need to stay alert while driving and walking and dress warmly. Temps will to the teens by midnight.

Friday night will have clearing skies. This will give way to more heat traveling to space and temperatures plummeting to 15°F in the city and near 10°F or lower in the rest of Southeast Michigan.

Saturday will be mostly sunny and colder than average, again. Highs will be in the low 30s to 35°F. Fitting for a hockey game, so Red Wings fans need to grab their thickest red winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves to wear outside Joe Louis Arena in the Motor City. The puck drops at 2 p.m.

Sunday will be partly sunny with thickening clouds in the afternoon and chilly rain for the second half of the day. Highs will be in the low 40s. Some snow flakes will mix in Sunday evening and Sunday night.

Monday will not be as chilly with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s. Tuesday and Wednesday will have daytime temps in the low to middle 50s. Next Thursday will be near 60 degrees with a chance of rain.
