5 hurt after tent collapses at church festival in Dearborn Heights

2 also injured after tent collapses at Harrison Twp. church festival

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – Crowds at two separate church festivals had quite a scare Friday evening as the wind brought down large tents at both events and several people were injured.

Trees toppled power lines in Southfield, there was complete darkness in Berkley and hundreds were without power in Lathrup Village.

Video from Dearborn Heights shows parishioners of St. Linus Catholic Church in full swing at the annual church festival when all of a sudden...

"One of the officers let us know that it was a take cover warning immediately," said parishioner Bill Strieff.

People ran for cover, but not everyone could move fast enough. The raging wind picked up the huge tent, tossing it with several people trapped underneath. Five of them were injured; one man is in serious condition and the other four suffered minor head injuries.

"We pray that all of the individuals will be safe and we'll be back tomorrow," said Strieff.

Father Paul Ballien counted his blessings, because this could have been worse.

"It was scary and devastating," said Ballien.

There were two minor injuries reported after a tent collapsed at the St. Hubert's Parish Festival in Harrison Township.
