Shower chances continue

Spectacular heavenly highlight, holiday weekend await

DETROIT – Good things come to those who wait ... so wait until you see the holiday weekend forecast.

First things first: scattered showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous as Tuesday afternoon progresses. Some of you will see very little rain, while others get a storm or two.

If you're going to Comerica Park for the Tigers game (interleague play is always so exciting to me, the Pirates are in town), there's still a shower chance early in the game, so one of those cheap plastic ponchos or an umbrella may come in handy.

However, rain chances will diminish as the game progresses, and we'll get a complete game in.

Temps this afternoon are in the low to mid 70s, and will only fall slowly through the evening, to an eventual low by morning in the upper 50s to near 60° (that's 15° Celsius for you Canadians).

Light southwest wind becoming west.

By the way, if you have any clearing of the skies in your area just after sunset, look to the west and you'll see two very bright "stars" very close together in the sky.

Those actually aren't stars, they're the planets Venus (the brighter one) and Jupiter! They have been getting closer and closer together over the past several weeks, and will be at their closest tonight.

It's going to be spectacular! And by the way, they will only be "close" together in our sky. In reality, out in space, they're zillions of miles apart. If it's cloudy tonight, don't fret, you'll still be able to see them in the evenings ahead.

While most of our Wednesday will be dry, a few spotty pop-up showers or thundershowers are possible between mid-afternoon and early evening. Some of us (especially west of a Lapeer-to-Pontiac-to-Livonia line) may not see anything at all, but all of us are at risk. Highs in the low to mid 70s (22° Celsius), and perhaps only upper 60s north of M-59.

West wind at 8 to 12 mph.

Wednesday's sunrise is at 6:01 AM, and Wednesday's sunset is at 9:14 PM.

Showers end Wednesday evening, with lows in the mid to upper 50s.

Now, let's get to the really good news. We've had a pretty wet start to summer, and we all need a good stretch of weather on the upcoming holiday. At this point, I think I'll be able to deliver on that. Any clouds that start our day on Thursday will move out, with mostly sunny skies developing, and we'll then be either mostly sunny or partly cloudy through Sunday -- what great timing! Highs will start off in the mid-to-upper 70s on Thursday, upper 70s to near 80° on Friday, low 80s on Saturday, then mid 80s on Sunday and Monday! Our next chance for storms is Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.

Overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s Thursday and Friday, near 60° on Saturday, low 60s on Sunday, and mid to upper 60s Monday and Tuesday.

Although I'm still watching some weak upper level disturbances that may affect us later this week, right now it appears that all of them will either pass far enough to our south or be weak enough as to not have much impact on our weather.
