DETROIT – A Wind Advisory is in effect for Metro Detroit and all of southeast Michigan until 1 a.m. Saturday.

As snow becomes less of a worry, concerns about damaging winds grows along with their speeds and gusts. Detroit Area airports, like Detroit Metro, Oakland International and Willow Run have persistent winds easily surpassing 20 mph with with gusts 25 mph or above 30 mph. According to the National Weather Service Forecast Office, at 12:31pm Monroe's Custer Airport had a wind gust of 39 mph.
Wicked winds can knock drivers of high profile vehicles, like trucks and RVs, off the road or snap tree branches and power lines.
Anyone encountering a downed wire should call their utility company or proper authority and back away immediately. Also, patiences is key to a safe trip. Slow downs and slippery mall parking lots will be common. Additionally, sidewalks, patios and balconies can get icy so be careful walking.
Much of Southeast Michigan will receive an additional inch of snow before the afternoon is done. If Detroit Metropolitan Airport receives and inch or more, this major winter storm for the rest of the country will be Detroit's first inch-maker for the season.

Saturday and Sunday will be sunnier but still cold with morning lows in the 20s, afternoon highs in the low 30s and wind chills in the single digits and teens.
