The 'calm after the snow storm' in metro Detroit

How do things look for Thanksgiving?

DETROIT – Before getting to the forecast, just a quick word about the weekend storm.

As I told you all last week, this was an extremely challenging storm to forecast (and I'm always upfront with you about this). I had both the timing and the location of the heaviest snow area pretty well forecasted.

However, the storm was strengthening as it moved through and that, combined with a slightly different location of the upper air dynamics, enhanced the heavy snow band, resulting in some remarkable snow totals, with some areas getting well over a foot of snow!

Detroit Metro Airport received 6 inches of snow, which smashed the old Nov. 21 record of 1.4 inches set way back in 1893. In case you're interested, here are the weekend weather maps showing the storm's path:

The snow covered peninsula looks like Michigan! What a cool shot!

Alright, onto my forecast:

Look for just flurries or a few light snow showers overnight, with skies eventually becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 20s (-2° Celsius for our Canadian neighbors). Southwest wind at 4 to 8 mph.

Partly cloudy on Tuesday, with highs in the upper 30s (4° Celsius). Southwest wind at 4 to 8 mph. Tuesday's sunrise is at 7:34 a.m., and Tuesday's sunset is at 5:05 p.m.

Becoming mostly clear Tuesday night, with lows near 30° (-1° Celsius).

Mostly sunny on Wednesday -- a great travel day here in the Midwest -- with highs warming into the upper 40s (9° Celsius).

Increasing clouds Wednesday night, with lows in the upper 30s (4° Celsius).

Mostly cloudy on Thursday but, fortunately, it still looks dry for America's Thanksgiving Day Parade (albeit a close call). Rain shower chances start to increase during the afternoon. Highs in the low 50s (11° Celsius). Remember that Local 4 is the only station that gives you exclusive live start-to-finish coverage of the parade!

Rain increases Thursday night, with lows in the mid 40s (7° Celsius).

Friday is going to be a rainy day, with highs near 50° (10° Celsius).

Rain gradually tapers off Friday night, with lows near 30° (-1° Celsius).

Partly cloudy on Saturday (dry for the Michigan and Michigan State games!), but cooler, with highs in the upper 30s (4° Celsius).

Then mostly sunny on Sunday, with highs in the low 40s (5° Celsius).
