Severe storms possible this afternoon in metro Detroit

Highs in the mid 80s

DETROIT – The storm threat increases into the mid afternoon with a cold front approaching. Highs should hit the mid 80s with mostly cloudy skies and breezy conditions.

Severe storms are most likely after 2 p.m.

Winds SSW 5-15 mph gusting over 20 mph at times.

A warm and muggy air mass here with an approaching cold front means some of the storms in the mid to late afternoon and beyond will be on the strong to severe side. Watch out for gusty, damaging winds and heavy downpours making travel very tricky. Lesser threats include hail and isolated tornadoes and the strongest of the storms will likely be in our far western suburbs.

We all need to keep an eye on the skies and on the radar later today.

Thursday forecast:

Periods of more heavy rain are moving through overnight into early Thursday. In fact, some of the heaviest rain of this storm complex will be early on Thursday before sunrise. But, expect showers lingering through the morning tomorrow and then some clearing into the afternoon hours. Highs tomorrow will only hit the mid 70s with breezy conditions again SW 10-20 mph.

The weather looks great Friday through the weekend. After some much needed rain midweek, we will be dry with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s all weekend. There's a chance for scattered rain and thundershowers late, late Sunday into early Monday. But, no big storms are expected as the model data indicates now. Temps will cool off a bit next week.
