Warm sunshine for GM River Days Sunday

Highs near 80 for first full day of summer 2014

DETROIT – Sunday's GM River Days weather is remarkable and warm; very fitting for the first full (24-hour) day of summer 2014. Monday, the day of the Ford Fireworks, will feel and look more like summer with increased humidity and the chance of storms.

Sunday morning will be cool and lovely with a few debris clouds from overnight Indiana and Ohio storms. Temperatures will be near 60 degrees for an early morning run or walking the dog. It warms up nicely for the start of GM River Days and during the mid-day hours.

Sunday afternoon will be warm, partly sunny and wonderful with highs near 80 degrees. Remember to drink plenty of water before shaking a leg along the Detroit waterfront. Also, it is never too early to practice summer weather safety by reminding family members to never leave children, pets nor anyone in a parked vehicle. The Local4Casters want everyone to have a happy, healthy summer in Detroit and Southeast Michigan, and eliminating the risk of heat stroke by avoiding the soaring triple-digit temperatures of a hot car is one of the best ways.

In addition to being the first full (24-hour) day of summer, Sunday is the start of Lightning Safety Week by the National Weather Service. "When you hear a roar, get indoors" is the motto whenever thunderstorms are predicted.

Sunday evening will be fair and warm with temperatures in the 70s.

More humid air arrives with a passing warm front Sunday night and Monday and will make the air more unstable. Overnight temperatures will be in the low and middle 60s under mostly cloudy skies.

Spotty showers and a few thunderstorms are possible Monday with more muggy air. Not everyone will get wet, but all of the Motor City area will be very warm and humid with highs in the middle and upper 80s. Families setting up for the Ford Fireworks early must stay hydrated and prepare for a shower or two during the day, especially between 1pm ET and 7pm ET.

During the night of the Ford Fireworks, a cold front will create a line of showers and thunderstorms marching across Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Southwest Michigan. Timing is crucial with these storms and the 10pm start of the fireworks display. Showers and storms will be on downtown Detroit's western doorstep. For now, the likelihood of soggy weather exists for the ride home for many spectators.
