Saturday starts sunny, then strong storms possible

DETROIT – The National Weather Service has put Detroit and all of southern Michigan in the "Slight Risk" category for severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. Isolated storms are possible between 2pm and 6pm. More widespread thunderstorms with heavy rain, damaging winds, lightning and hail are possible at 6pm and afterward.

The last full weekend of summer will have the warmest day of the week on Saturday and a brief shot of rain in the middle. Autumn begins at 10:29 p.m. ET on Monday, September 22, 2014.

Saturday morning will be cool and lovely for early-risers with temperatures in the 50s. Families walking the dog or riding their bikes will enjoy crisp conditions and dry roads and sidewalks. Tailgaters will have a great time in East Lansing for the noon match-up between the Spartans and Eastern Michigan University. Skies will be bright and blue there and in Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

The Michigan Wolverines take on Utah at 3:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor. Sunshine will remain bright over Michigan Stadium as it gets warmer. The mercury will rise to near 80 degrees at the game and in Motown. By the fourth quarter of the game (6 p.m.), showers and thunderstorm encroach onto the Detroit and Ann Arbor area. There is a "Slight Risk" of severe thunderstorms according the the National Weather Service late Saturday afternoon and evening. Heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and lightning are possible.

Detroit Tigers fans traveling to Kansas City for the 1pm game against the Royals in a heated baseball race will be met with much warmer conditions and a chance of shower and thunderstorms. Highs in K.C. will be in the middle and upper 80s.

The chance of showers comes to the Motor City and southern Michigan Saturday evening as temperature dip to near 70 degrees. The chance of rain lasts overnight.

Saturday night will have a chance of showers with lows in the 60s. Anyone with late night plans will need to use caution on wet roads.

Sunday morning will be damp with lingering showers. the afternoon will be drier with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 70s. It will turn into a magnificent, mild day to head to the cider mill or the 2014 Renaissance Festival in Holly.

Again, fall begins at 10:29pm, Monday. The day will feel like autumn with sunny skies and highs only in the low 60s. Tuesday and Wednesday will be milder and mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s.
