DETROIT – Although a band of light snow will develop overhead this evening well north of Detroit, the "main event" snow is coming at us from the southwest.
This snow will arrive overnight, and we'll probably have an inch or two on the ground by the time you wake up Saturday morning (north of I-69, you'll have a later start time for the snow, so you'll have less than an inch on the ground first thing Saturday morning).
The slow moving storm will grind out snow most of the day Saturday, with an average of 4 to 6 inches of total snow accumulating by evening. Those of you south of Detroit will be on the higher end of the range, with amounts gradually decreasing the farther north you go.
The I-696 / I-96 / M-59 corridor should be in the 4 to 5 inch range, and north of I-69, totals may only be 3 to 4 inches.
The snow will taper off Saturday evening, and I don't think we'll see much more after midnight.
Here is the projected snowfall map from our RPM computer model (total snow through early Saturday evening) to give you an idea what amounts of snow the rest of the region will see.
Fortunately, this snow is coming on a weekend, and wind doesn't appear that bad (from the northeast at 8 to 13 mph). So, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 20s during the afternoon, Saturday should be a great day for kids (and adults) to play in the snow.
