SE Michigan experiences significant first snow of season

Winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories expire across Metro Detroit

DETROIT – Our first snow of the season has been significant. Snow was expected to taper off to lighter snow showers by 8-9 p.m. in most areas.

The winter storm warning that was in effect for Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties has expired. The winter weather advisory for Monroe and Wayne Counties also expired Saturday night.

WATCH: Snow continues to fall

Winds will be breezy and out of the west at 10-20 mph. Some additional snow will fall mainly north of I-69 through midnight. Here's what we should end up with, even though there will be isolated spots that pick up more than a foot!:

So why did this storm overachieve?  Two reasons:  First, the morning round showed up much stronger. Second and most importantly, the surface low driving the system stayed further south. That dragged the band of heaviest snow right on top of us... And didn't give us that expected break between the morning round and main afternoon event. The further south low track kept temperatures lower too and many locations didn't make it above 32 this afternoon.

WATCH: More snow than expected

Sunday expect a few lingering early flakes. Skies will eventually become mostly sunny, but highs again will hang out around 32.
