DETROIT - Winter Weather Advisory Until 10 a.m. – Snow this morning is covering a lot of the area roadways and it should be snow and some wintry mix through 6 or 7 a.m. with a few inches on the ground and very tricky travel.

Tune into Local 4 News Today for details on our CarCast which starts at 7 a.m. and will be the best way to guide you to work.

That snow switches to freezing rain and sleet from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. and it may switch to all rain in our South Zone before that. The Wintry Mix and switch to rain moves from south to north so it takes our North Zone the longest to transition and will likely see higher snow accumulations of 3-5” before the rain takes over.

After the afternoon rain, a cold front will approach early evening and the winds will be kicking up. Highs should be in the neighborhood of 40 degrees with winds S 10-25 mph.

High Wind Watch 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday- The cold front will kick up winds this evening 30-45 mph with the chance for some gusts between 50-60 mph. This will cause power outages and knock down tree limbs etc… in spots across SE Lower Michigan. That cold front may also mean a quick change back from rain to some light snow. Temps overnight cool back down to near freezing.

A morning switch to sleet, freezing rain, and rain will make things a slushy and possibly icy mess. But the conversion to rain and temps warming into the low and mid 30s will lessen the ice threat. Rain showers, heavy at times, will be with us through the afternoon tomorrow as highs head into the upper 30s and low 40s and the winds will be whipping SSW 10-25 mph.

Most of Wednesday looks dry but we will have a mix or light snow early morning and then calming down. The winds are lighter after 10am and highs will hit the low 40s tomorrow around Metro Detroit. An isolated rain shower is possible, but again it will be mostly dry tomorrow.

Models are split on how to handle an approaching storm Thursday. Highs in the mid 30s to possibly mid 40s. It all depends on the timing of the cold front and if it comes through in the morning, we could see cooler temps and perhaps a switch from rain to snow through the morning. We’ll keep you posted.  You can stay ahead of the cold, snow, and rain with the Local4Casters app and take the weather with you.
