BOYNE FALLS, Mich. – The world’s longest timber towered suspension bridge is going to get a whole lot more colorful this summer, thanks to some very talented knitters and crocheters.
The Michigan SkyBridge, located between two peaks at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls, is celebrating National Yarn Bombing Day with “Knit The Bridge” starting on Saturday, June 8.

The SkyBridge will be decorated by hand-crafted knit and crochet panels that were made by masters of the art, to just beginners. My only question is why wasn’t I asked to make a panel? I am the king of crochet, after all!

More than 200 hand-crafted panels will be hung up on the SkyBridge, and visitors can take in the colorful views, all the while taking in all the gorgeous scenery that the bridge has to offer. It’s a win-win! The 1,200 foot-long SkyBridge is the perfect place to see so much beauty.
Weather permitting, the yarn installation will be up for about two weeks.
So what exactly is yarn bombing? It’s a popular trend involving adorning objects and public spaces with knitted and crocheted patches or panels. Think of it as a giant tree wearing a knitting sweater. The juxtaposition of random objects being decorated with colorful knitted or crocheted patches is both silly and beautiful to look at.

A purchase to see Knit the Bridge will include a chairlift ride to the mountain’s summit and a walk across the iconic SkyBridge. There will also be live music, artist meet-and-greet and refreshments. It’s a perfect activity for an Up North summer day.
