YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the person who robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint Tuesday night in Ypsilanti Township.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said the carrier was in the 1100 block of Georgina Drive just after 7 p.m. when a man with a handgun confronted him and pushed him to the ground.
Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department said the robbers got the jump on the mail carrier.
"One actually pulled out a handgun and that is when he postal worker actually got down on the ground and then they got into the truck and took several packages from it," Jackson said.
The gunman then took the carrier's mail truck keys.
A second man helped the gunman steal several packages before fleeing.
The only description released by the USPIS is of the gunman -- a black man, 6 feet tall, thin to medium build. He was wearing a gold and blue waist-length jacket.
Derrick Jackson said everyone should be on the lookout for thieves ready to pounce on potential victims at this time of the year.
"Just make sure people are vigilant and understand that. Keep an eye out for one another. Look for suspicious people kind of hanging around during the day. If you see any of that, just call. It's better to be safe than sorry," Jackson said.
