ANN ARBOR – Valentine’s Day. Candlelight dinners, chocolates, champagne, honoring that person who completes you -- these are all the usual types of ideas that come to mind when talking about the heart-filled day.

Nowadays, people tend to push against the traditional idea of Valentine’s Day and celebrate the love of the amazing people surrounding them and, thanks to Leslie Knope, we now even celebrate Galentine’s Day on Feb. 13. When compiling this list I wanted to embrace the love and go against the grain with a few unique ideas.

The fourth annual Run 4 Love is a virtual 5K/10K run. The event will earn you two medals, one key and one heart that, when placed together, will fit perfectly. As February is heart month, Moon Joggers is donating 15% of your entry fee to Heart to Heart International. Since the race is a virtual one, you can run wherever you want, but remember, you won’t get those awesome medals until you’ve submitted your time.

For the movie lovers

The Michigan Theater will be screening the 1940s classic romantic comedy “His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. The movie is riddled with great, witty one-liners and will please any rom-com fan. Members of the Michigan Theater can get in for free but must RSVP to reserve their seats.

For the trivia fan

Speaking of rom-coms, if you are a huge fan of this genre and want to put that knowledge to the test, head on over to Haymaker. All those years of watching rom-coms can now be put to use and may end getting you a gift card for $100. This trivia night is free to play, but you must reserve your table in order to participate. Good luck and I’ll say a little prayer for you.

For the comedy fans

If you love laughing until your sides hurt, comedian Tracy Smith will be at the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase Valentine’s Day weekend. Tracy knows a thing or two about love, sex, dating, and living on the mean streets of “Singletown.” Her television credits include a half-hour special for “Comedy Central Presents,” “Late Fridays” on NBC, “Premium Blend,” “Friday Night” and “Shorties Watchin’ Shorties” on Comedy Central, as well as “The Best of the Fest” on HBO Comedy.

For tickets visit the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase website.

For the anti-Valentiner

The Old German is having an Anti-Valentine's Day night by hosting a karaoke competition and nothing says, "anti-Valentine" more than singing your heart out. But if you're not a singer, you can still drink beer and enjoy the dulcet sounds of the brokenhearted. However, if you do sing, you may win the $150 grand prize.

So whether you go out for a romantic dinner or you go hang out with the crew, there are so many options out there to choose from. Who needs candlelight, chocolate and sweet wines? All you need is the love of great friends and a great beverage to produce an awesome Valentine’s Day.
