According to officials, Officer Michael Alvarez was a Pinellas County Sheriff’s detective in Florida before he came to Ann Arbor.

Pinellas County is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater, Florida Metro area.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said Alvarez left Florida in 2017 after a judge found he was intentionally untruthful on a search warrant for a crime. Alvarez reportedly used that warrant to obtain evidence to prosecute for other crimes.

Officials said because of Alvarez’s actions, charges will mostly likely be dismissed against a man who was arrested after a search of his home in 2016.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Alverez would be imprisoned if he was still in his jurisdiction.

“If he was in Pinellas County today," Gualtieri said, "I would arrest him and put him in jail on a perjury charge.”
