According to MASA, the award is "presented to a member who has shown tremendous effort and dedication to enriching the lives of children and the community as a whole." The announcement was made on Monday, Oct. 16.
“Dr. Swift has been a positive advocate for the Ann Arbor Public Schools, as well as for public education, and I am proud to announce that she has earned the honor of being named Michigan Superintendent of the Year,” said Chris Wigent, executive director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators. “She has demonstrated exceptional leadership for her district, adding quality programs, increasing achievement levels for all students, and engaging with staff and parents as well as with local businesses and community organizations in support of all children.”
The association's selection committee includes representatives from several educational institutions across Michigan, including the State Board of Education, superintendents, local school boards, the Michigan Parent Teacher Association, principals and teachers. Dr. Swift was selected from a group of highly qualified and accomplished nominees and is now in the running for the national award.
In December, four finalists will be selected by a Blue Ribbon Selection Committee of the American Association of School Administrators. Those finalists will participate in interviews and a national briefing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in January, and in early March, the National Superintendent of the Year winner will be announced.
Dr. Swift's nomination for the honor reads:
“Respectfully and on behalf of the Board of Education, the Ann Arbor Public Schools, and our community, we nominate Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift for Superintendent of the Year. Under Dr. Swift’s leadership in the AAPS, exciting new programs have opened in schools, student achievement outcomes continue to improve, enrollment has increased, top-quality arts programming continues to thrive and the AAPS has received a number of national awards for excellence. Dr. Swift is everywhere in our district and community, serving as a tireless advocate for children and for the Ann Arbor Public Schools.”
