ANN ARBOR - An after-party gone awry, a time-travel trip through the unconscious and a universe-hopping adventure about geek culture are the plays theater goers can look forward to this weekend during Theatre Nova's Michigan Playwrights Festival

The Michigan Playwrights Festival is designed to help aspiring playwrights develop and hone their craft for future seasons. The festival, which began on Tuesday, has already featured plays by local talents Ron Riekki, Michael Herman, and Jill Halpern.

On Friday, at 8 p.m., fans of the festival can look forward to "The After-Party," from Kim Carney, about a 50-something woman, Yvette, who brings a 30-something man, Allen, back home after a Christmas party. Things don't go exactly as planned, to say the least. "The After-Party" is directed by Carrie Sayer.

On Saturday, at 8 p.m., Linda Ramsay-Detherage brings “Mama’s Moon Machine” to Theatre Nova. Directed by Adriane Galea, the play tells the story of 99-year-old Clementine Pascal, a woman who is dying in her New York City hospital bed on Sept. 11, 2001. Clementine's reality begins to blur as unconsciousness sets in, and eventually she wakes up in Queens in 1921. Why this day? It's the day she dropped a flower pot on her mother's head, changing her future forever.

The festival ends on Sunday, at 2 p.m. with “RETCON or Actually It’s a Play About Ethics in Superhero Journalism,” by Joe Zarrow. Krista Schafer Ewbank directs this story about a beloved comic book superheroine who finally gets her own movie. When some fans reveal that they're unhappy with the casting choice, the play veers into a tale about race, the nature of geek culture and keeping your story straight.
