Ann Arbor Roller Derby to kick off home season with back to back games Saturday

Learn about roller derby, watch a few bouts, have some fun, support local teams

ANN ARBOR, Mich - This Saturday at Buhr Park, watch the members of Ann Arbor Roller Derby take on Flint Roller Derby and Tri-City Roller Derby: Plan B in back to back roller derby bouts.

Starting at 6 p.m. Ann Arbor Roller Derby teams will take on their opponents during two flat-track roller derby bouts.

Created in 2010, Ann Arbor Roller Derby is made up of three traveling teams (Ann Arbor Brawlstars, Arbor Bruising Company and Ypsilanti Vigilantes) each competing and ranking in different Women's Flat Track Roller Derby Association divisions.

Currently, Ann Arbor Brawlsters is ranked 26th in the world of chartered WFTRDA teams and plays nationally and internationally, having reached international playoffs consecutively over the past three years. Team B, Ann Arbor Bruising Company, is currently one of the highest ranked B teams in the United States and competes against teams both nationally and regionally. Last but not least, the Ypsilanti Vigilantes play again other Team C leveled teams around Michigan and regionally.

All three teams have either claimed state championship titles or have worked their way up to rank highly at the state championship level within the past three years.

There is also a group of unteamed players, aptly and collectively named “the Bank,” who practice with the traveling teams.

The three traveling teams will play three more home dates, with two bouts each, one per competing team:

  • June 22 (against teams Windsor Roller Derby and Minnesota Nice)

  • July 27 (against Queen City Roller Girls: Lake Effect Furies and Subzero Sirens)

  • Aug. 17 (against Naptown Roller Derby: Tornado Sirens and Warning Belles)

Doors open at 5:30  p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door ($12 for students, seniors and military) but $10 when bought in advance online

On top of the excitement of the roller derbies, home bouts also feature drinks from North Center Brewing (Northville) as well as snacks from Ray’s Red Hots, Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea and Go! Icecream (in June and July), kids; activities, Roller Derby 101, raffles, contests and league merchandise.

Roller derby bouts take place at in the ice rink at Buhr Park, located at 2751 Packard Road.
