ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Chances are you've driven past a landmark countless times and never even given it a second thought, but there's a story behind the now-iconic symbol in Metro Detroit.
Every day, we welcome thousands of visitors to Metro Detroit, and as they drive along I-94 from the airport it's impossible not to notice one thing in particular in Allen Park: the giant tire.
Steve Frey started doing some research and eventually wrote a book about it. The tire stands 80 feet high and weighs 11 tons. It has stood alongside eastbound I-94 in Allen Park since 1966 but that's not where the story begins.
