DETROIT – GMC unveiled its all-new 2015 Canyon mid-size pickup truck Sunday, a few days ahead of its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show.
The Canyon shares a platform with the all-new Chevrolet Colorado, which first debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show back in November. However, the GMC model shares much of the same styling cues as its larger sibling, the GMC Sierra, which was just redesigned last year.
Among those features include the c-shaped LED accents around the headlights and a three-bar grille.
GMC promises big-truck performance in the Canyon, despite its smaller size. The truck can have a maximum towing capacity of 6,700 pounds, it has 13 moveable tie-down locations plus four stationary ones, and the bed can accept a platform that splits it into upper and lower sections.
Powering all this truck is a standard inline four-cylinder engine with an estimated 193 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. There's also a 3.6-liter V-6 available that cranks out 302 horsepower and 270 pound feet of torque.
Inside, GMC is trying to make trucks more civilized with things like a standard 4.2-inch screen embedded in the instrument cluster, an available 8-inch screen in the center console and several USB ports. If you want, you can even have a Canyon with a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot.
There's also a new gadget specifically targeted at parents. It's called "Teen Driver" and it allows parents to set things like a radio volume limit and speed limit (similar to Ford's MyKey system). GM's version can also mute the radio when a seat belt is not fastened, and it records information about speed, braking and other useful information that can be reported back to the parents.
The 2015 Canyon is expected to go on sale a little later this year.
