Richard Austin was the first African American elected to a state office in Michigan, other than the Supreme Court.

And he was the Secretary of State in Michigan for 24 years from 1971 to 1995. In 1941, he became the first black Certified Public Accountant in Michigan and ran for mayor in 1969.
