'Passion for Fashion' challenge: Inspiring designers

American Sewing Expo is this weekend in Novi

NOVI, Mich. – The American Sewing Expo is THE place to be this weekend if you're interested in crafting, scrapping and sewing.  The showroom floor is huge with goodies from all over the world that you can't find, unless you know what to look for.

One of the highlights is the Passion for Fashion challenge.  It's a cool copycat of Project Runway in which aspiring designers competed to compete in a special challenge.  This year it's Music Makes The Fashion, and 12 aspiring designers from all over the country and one from Korea were given their assignment this morning. They have to make a run-way garment fit for an up and coming music star.  Elvis, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, KISS, Woodstock, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Jimi Hendrix are just some of the inspirations these designers can draw from.

There projects can't leave the building and they're on a tight deadline.  From concept--to pattern--to finished products they will be judged during a live fashion show at the Expo Saturday.

Visit this article throughout the weekend for photos updating you on their progress.

The Expo is being held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi and runs from Saturday morning 9-6 through Sunday 9-through -5.
