Heart of Detroit: Paul and Todd Turner's 'GUTS'

Like a lot of Americans, Paul and Todd Turner grew up playing sports.

They idolized our nation’s greatest athletes but now it is a new set of athletes that has their special attention.

“A lot of what society does is we value the elite athlete and we put that elite athlete on a pedestal but even more so the special needs community um they are not even on the radar, Mitch,” Paul Turner said.

Paul and Todd decided it was time to change that.  They started Team GUTS, a fitness program housed in their GUTS facility in Ferndale.

Paul and Todd offer classes in dance and Zumba as well as training in team sports and physical fitness.

“My daughter she has Down Syndrome and Autism as well she is non-verbal,” Todd Turner said.

The kids get moving and dancing and exercising and have a great time.

“We can engage them young you know the science says they will stay with so all the benefits that you and I get from exercising obviously exponentially they get it as well,” Paul Turner said.

Why Team GUTS?

“It gets your attention, doesn’t it?” Todd Turner said.  “It stands for Ground Up Training System.”

Creating opportunities for all athletes, Paul and Todd Turner are proving what a little GUTS can do right here in the heart of Detroit.
