What: On June 15, 2019, the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC) and its parent organization ACCESS—the nation’s largest Arab American community nonprofit—will be partnering with Dream of Detroit, a local nonprofit engaging in community organizing and housing and economic development, to help in restoration efforts in a neighborhood on the Westside of Detroit. Service Day volunteers will work on refurbishing old homes, cleaning up debris and planting community gardens in an area that includes a place of worship and two nonprofit spaces.
National Arab American Service Day is a project launched by ACCESS 15 years ago and occurs annually in different states across the U.S. every spring to foster leadership and community engagement through service and volunteerism. Over the years, ACCESS has engaged nearly 50,000 volunteers in service projects to benefit communities across the country.
Who: Nationally, 18 organizations, in addition to ACCESS, are participating in collaborating and responding creatively to their communities’ needs. Under its motto, “Serving Communities, Connecting People,” National Arab American Service Day draws Arab Americans and non-Arabs in 8 states, including 14 major cities and Washington, D.C., for a day of community-building.
