Detroit Public Schools to be represented at Michigan School Expo

Local 4's Ashlee Baracy looks at unique programs some Detroit public schools offer

DETROIT - Local 4 is proud to bring back for a third year the Michigan School Expo, which takes places Saturday at Oakland Mall.

Hundreds of schools, from preschool through college and trade schools, will all be under one roof so you can talk with their representatives.

Local 4's Ashlee Baracy got a look at the unique programs some of Detroit's public schools offer.

Detroit Public Schools are making the grade in unconventional ways, from playing the guitar in world studies, improving cognitive abilities and sportsmanship by playing chess, to learning ballroom dancing for 8th grade graduation.

"One way to work on that and thereby increase academics is to get that socialization together, dancing and movement, hand-eye coordination. It really helps and supports," said Dianne Holland, Principal of Davison Elementary. "It's really not a traditional middle school at all."

Including public, private and charter schools, 181 Detroit schools were reviewed by Excellent Schools Detroit. DPS took 12 of the top 20 spots. Davison Elementary was one of them.

"They walked into the classrooms and witnessed the instruction taking place," said Holland. "They stayed during lunch, they also took a close look at our MEAP scores."

Holland thinks their micro-society, where students run and operate businesses and agencies, sets them apart.

"It's one thing to read it in a book, but to actually do it," said Clippert Student Shailee Gray.

The students over at Clippert Academy are tackling real life issues in their studies. Principal Kim Gonzalez isn't surprised that they cracked the Top 20 list, too.

"They all generally finish and go to college," said Gonzalez. "We even start at this level looking at getting them scholarships."

The Detroit Public School System has open enrollment until May 10th. Stop by the Michigan School Expo on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Oakland Mall if you are interested in learning more about DPS or other schools in the area.
