Focus Hope offers program for women to earn certificates in IT and manufacturing

A new program at Focus Hope is designed to get women in fields that have historically been dominated by men and the 13-week training class was made possible by General Motors.

GM donated $370,000 to Focus Hope for a training program for women to earn four certificates required in IT and manufacturing.

“This is an opportunity to set the stage and make a mark for themselves within an industry that’s growing in the region,” Director of Workforce Development and Education Rashida Thomas said.

Thirty students began class Monday. Another 30 students will begin Feb. 18.

"Women are underrepresented in the manufacturing and IT workforce and there is a need for more highly trained female professionals, which the Women In Manufacturing & Technology program has been designed to provide."

The program is free and applicants must have completed high school or received a GED.
