Grill cleaning tips for start of summer

Get your grill clean, get grilling for Memorial Weekend

As you break out the barbecue for the summer season, you may be looking for some new ways to get the grill ready for the new season. There are a few tricks that could help you, courtesy the Reader's Digest version of "Extraordinary Uses For Ordinary Things".


  1. Try using WD-40. You just spray it on the grill, wait for a few seconds and then scrub with a wire brush. It should look like new again. Of course, do not spray the WD-40 on a burning or hot grill. There is some debate online if WD-40 is safe enough to use on cooking surfaces. If you decide to use it, remember to wash the surface thoroughly before using.

  2. You can make a cleaning paste from 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/4 of water. Apply the past with a wire brush and let it dry for 15 minutes. Then, wipe it down with a dry cloth. Place the grill over hot coals for at least 15 minutes to burn off any residue.


  3. Put the racks in a big plastic garbage bag, spray oven cleaner on them, close the bag and let it sit overnight. The next day open the bag. Remember to keep your face away from the fumes. All the burned on gunk should wipe right off when you clean it.

  4. After you're done grilling for the day and while the coals are still red-hot, place a piece of aluminum foil over the grill to burn off any remaining pieces of food. Leave the foil in place. The next time you're ready to grill, crumple up the foil and use it to easily scrub off the burned food.
