MACOMB COUNTY - The water is one of Macomb County's best resources -- and county leaders are looking for new ways to make the most of it.

"Leaders Advancing Macomb" on Thursday unveiled plans to make the waterfront more accessible for everyone.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said the hope is to provide picnic areas, trails and even campgrounds.

"You go to Traverse City, you go to Grand Haven, you have the opportunity to access the lake itself. Why? Because they have beach fronts, they have areas where people can launch their boats. Here in Macomb County, we've kind of negated that. We haven't really thought about how important that really is," Hackle said.

The waterfront development will focus on the stretch from Lake St. Clair to the Clinton River.

"We need to grow the interest and understanding of what that lake is all about to people who live in Macomb County but also throughout the region," Hackel said. "We want to be a destination location."

For the next couple of years, the group will focus on fundraising and getting potential investors on board.
