DETROIT – The Q-Line is going to have some competition Monday as the Detroit People Mover is celebrating 30 years of service with free rides for passengers.
The People Mover first opened 30 years ago on July 31, 1987 and has since provided over 65 million trips, according to its website.

The People Mover, which has stops at various locations downtown such as the Renaissance Center, the Financial District and Cobo Hall, has brought over $12 million in revenue to the city through transportation and environmental and financial benefits. The People Mover also goes through Greektown, Bricktown and past the Riverfront, among other stops.
As part of the “Detroit People Mover Anniversary Day,” the public can enjoy free rides all day and a special treat from Detroit Water Ice. Samples of the frozen dessert will be available from noon to 2 p.m. at the Grand Circus Park and Financial District Stations, where patrons will also have the opportunity to try a new “Mover Mystery Flavor” named especially for the anniversary. Patrons will also be able to name this treat using the People Mover’s Twitter handle and hashtag, @DetPeople Mover and #DETPeopleMover30.
The People Mover typically costs $0.75 per ride and runs seven days a week. Seniors citizens and those with disabilities are eligible to purchase tokens at $0.35.
