Pre-Lenten pastries a hot commodity in Michigan

DETROIT - The fat-drenched pastries known as paczki are a hot commodity at Michigan bakeries and churches.

The pre-Lenten Polish pastries are on sale for Fat Tuesday in the once-predominantly Polish community of Hamtramck as well as other places around the state.

People lined up in the Detroit enclave to pick up the calorie-laden indulgences. They come in a range of flavors from strawberry to chocolate to lemon custard.

In Grand Rapids, Fat Tuesday generally is the busiest time of the year at Sandy's Donuts. Members of the area's Polish Catholic community turn out. And in Saginaw, people from Saginaw and Bay counties baked the treats for sale at St. Josaphat Catholic Church.

Where is your favorite place to get the treat?
