ARLINGTON, Va. – The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety released its top safety picks for 2012 Thursday morning.

In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans and 3 pickup trucks earned the award.
Eighteen new recipients received the award, while 97 models that previously qualified last year carried over to 2012.
General Motors received 14 awards, Ford received 12, and Chrysler had 11.
The IIHS grades the vehicles on their ability to protect drivers and passengers when involved in front, side, rollover and rear crashes.
