Elderly Bloomfield Twp. resident scammed out of $200,000

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An elderly Bloomfield Township woman was scammed out of $200,000 over the course of two years believing she had won the lottery.

Officers spoke to the woman about the scam Tuesday.

In October of 2014, shortly after the death of the woman’s husband, she was notified that she had won $5 million and a Mercedes Benz from “The National Lottery.

Over more than two years, she was put in contact with a variety of people, including people claiming to be with the IRS.

She was told to send checks to carious people and places across the country in order to receive her winnings. The woman sent over 30 checks totaling about $200,000.

The preliminary investigation revealed the money most likely was sent to Jamaica.

The woman didn’t tell family members until recently because she was embarrassed.
