Consumer Reports runs down latest price cuts for TVs

DETROIT - In the retail world, it's a perfect storm of price cuts and a super big reason to buy a new big screen television.

With Super Bowl XLVII coming up, many fans think January is a great time to splurge on a new TV.

It's also a good time to buy when it comes to saving money.

This time of year, retailers are looking to clear inventory before the new models arrive. 

While some price-tracking websites predict price cuts of 10-15%, Consumer Reports is predicting you could see cuts of 5-10%.

The good news, Consumer Reports says prices are already lower than last year. However, it's noticing some differences in prices, and it's telling customers do some bargain hunting by going to several stores or online retailers to get a good idea on what the best price could be. 

Best Models 

The consumer magazine has also taken a look at the options, and come up with a list of some of the best models. Up first, the category you might call "Go Big or Go Home." 

Consumer Reports is giving kudos to the Panasonic Viera Plasma TV- It's a 65-inch, 3D-capable, 1080p. It sells for about $3,700.

Consumer Reports says it has excellent high-def picture quality, very good 3D performance, and even very good sound. However, the magazine says its seen the model for as low as $2,600, a perfect example of why you should shop around. 

The experts at Consumer Reports also give the Samsung, 60-inch, PN60E8000 high marks. They say this model also has excellent high-definition picture quality, very good 3D performance, and very good sound. Prices can range from $1,900 to $2,300. 

Budget Picks 

The magazine also looked at televisions that aren't quite as expensive. Consumer Reports liked a 60-inch, 3D-capable Samsung plasma TV for $1,300. 

It also liked the LG 60PM6700 for $1,250. That model is 60-inches, 3D-capable, 1080P PLASMA.  It received high marks for very good HD picture quality and 3D performance. This one also comes with a gesture-based Magic Remote.
