For many of us, our dogs are part of the family. If they suddenly disappear we leap into action hoping to find them as quickly as possible. Now, there's an app for that!

"Finding Rover," is a piece of face recognition technology that helps re-unite dogs, and their owners.

"I remember the day we lost our pet, and how traumatic it was for our kids. Driving down the neighborhood, putting posters up, there must be a better way," said John Polimeno, the founder of "Finding Rover."

Along with dog tags and microchips, "Finding Rover" can help if your ever gets lost.

If Your Dog Goes Missing

If your dog ever runs out of the yard, here's how "Finding Rover" can help. First, have a photo of your dog on hand. The app even comes with a "bark button" that grabs your pet's attention and helps them look at the camera. Make sure you have that nice face photo in your computer or phone.

Hopefully, you never need to use it, but if you do "Finding Rover" might make all the difference. You can post your dog's photo on "Finding Rover". The app will send a push notification and social media photo alert to other dog owners so they know your dog is missing. The search notice is sent to owners within a ten mile radius at first. They'll know to look for your dog.

If You Find A Lost Dog

If you find a lost dog, you can also snap a photo and send it to "Finding Rover". The app's facial recognition technology can then match the dog you found-- with a pet on the list of missing animals. The app creates a virtual "lost and found" for pets that can reunite owners with their dogs.

The Human Society of Michigan wants Ruth to the Rescue to remind you that while all the new apps and chips are great inventions, owners should have collars and tags on their dogs as another way to make sure they can find their way home.

Right now, the app is only available on iPhones, but the creators are working on an Android version. This app is just to help with lost dogs, but they might also come up with an app for lost cats in the future.
