Cheap, affordable summer activities for kids

As kids start to get out of school for the summer, parents might start worrying about how the kids’ summer break will impact their checking account.

Don’t fret --  there are plenty of free ways to entertain your kids this summer.

Tour local fire department: Kids love to see fire trucks up close. Call ahead to see if your local fire department offers tours to the public to let your kids learn more about fire safety and the roles of firemen and women.

Go fishing: Teaching kids to fish can allow for fun summer days. You can spend hours on a lake enjoying the weather, bonding, and learning a new activity.

Create backyard fun: Instead of paying to go to a recreation center or indoor park, consider setting up an obstacle course and games in your own back yard.

Create craft projects: There are many DIY craft ideas on Pinterest and other websites that can make for fun afternoon activities, especially on rainy days.

Community education programs: Many community centers offer free classes and activities for kids during the summer. Check with your local community to see if there are any upcoming activities your kids might enjoy.

Tour a nature center: Many nature centers offer tours to kids so they can take a closer look at plants and animals that are native to their area.

Have a picnic: Pack up a picnic lunch and go to your kids’ favorite park for a fun and free afternoon.

Family game night: Have a weekly family game night where you can play board games or outdoor games as a family.

Watch for freebies: At times throughout the summer some movie theaters will offer free movies, and local museums and zoos might offer free admission.
