We all know college is expensive, but are you aware of just how expensive it is?
For a four-year, in-state public college, in the 2014-15 school year the average cost was $18,943. This includes tuition, fees and room and board. This cost was up 1 percent from the previous year.

What about private colleges? A four-year private college tallied an average of $31,231 for tuition, fees and room and board last school year. This was up 1.6 percent from the previous year.
So how can students and their families afford college? Some families are looking at alternative solutions to just setting up a college savings plan. Some families are encouraging their children to live at home while they attend college, some are asking their kids to get a part-time job during the school year to help pay for tuition and fees, and some are encouraging their children to start at community college to save money.
